Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, as SPD top candidate, wants to start the Hessian state election campaign late. “Today is not the time for election campaigns. Russia is still waging the terrible war against Ukraine, the effects of which we have to deal with,” Hesse’s SPD leader told the German Press Agency. “The election campaign will take place very compactly in the last few weeks before the election.” This is scheduled for October 8th.
With a view to her double burden as Federal Minister of the Interior and SPD top candidate in Hesse, Faeser reiterated: “One thing is clear to me: I will always exercise my office to the full. I think people would expect the same from the incumbent Prime Minister (Boris Rhein, CDU).”
The 52-year-old said: “At our state party conference on June 17 (in Hanau), we will decide on a strong program for Hesse.” The question in the federal state is standstill with the current black-green coalition or “real departure with the SPD”. Faeser added that her party stands for “that all people in Hesse can lead a good and secure life – no matter how much money they have, where their family came from, who they love or what they believe in”.
According to the “Hessen trend” of the Hessischer Rundfunk from March 2023, the CDU would have got 32 percent of the votes in a state election at that time, the Green Party 22 percent and the SPD 20 percent. If the prime minister had been elected directly in March, CDU incumbent Rhein would have received 32 percent of the vote, Green Economics Minister Tarek Al-Wazir 23 percent and Faeser 17 percent.
In principle, election polls only reflect the opinion at the time of the survey and are not a forecast for the outcome of the election.
