Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has called for a clear condemnation of Russia’s annexation of Ukrainian territories in the United Nations (UN) General Assembly. The world has become more insecure for every country with Russia’s blatant breach of the UN Charter, said the Green politician on Friday after talks with her Pakistani counterpart Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in Berlin. In the General Assembly next week, when voting on a resolution on the illegal annexation, every vote counts “to make it clear to Russia that these areas belong to Ukraine.”
“No one should question a country’s sovereignty, especially not by force,” stressed Baerbock. Zardari left open the question of whether Pakistan would agree to the resolution against Russia. He only said that one would coordinate accordingly within the governing coalition. In early March, Pakistan abstained from voting on a resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at an emergency session of the UN General Assembly.
Baerbock and Zardari strongly condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin’s threats to use nuclear weapons. The German foreign minister called Putin’s actions irresponsible. The world community must come up with an answer together. Putin does not shy away from the worst war crimes. The federal government reevaluates the news situation every day. “But we continue to stand together and together behind Ukraine’s right to self-defense.”
Zardari said using nuclear weapons is not an option anywhere in the world. He called on Ukraine and Russia to use diplomatic means in a rational and sensible manner to find a peaceful solution to the conflict. Pakistan is concerned about the direction things are taking. Pakistan is also considered a suspected nuclear power.
