Almost a quarter of the people living in Germany in the past year have a history of immigration. That is 20.2 million people or 24.3 percent of the total population, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. The authority defined people with a history of immigration as people who have immigrated to Germany themselves since 1950, as well as their direct descendants, the “second generation”.
The increase in migrant people was up 6.5 percent or 1.2 million people year-on-year. Refugee migration in particular played a role here, particularly as a result of the war in Ukraine. The number of people who immigrated themselves rose by 7.3 percent, primarily from Ukraine, Syria and Afghanistan, and thus more than the number of direct descendants of immigrant parents born in Germany, which rose by four percent.
