Joe Chialo was close to it quite often. In the 1980s, when he was an avid soccer player, legendary coach Holger Osieck approached him. He saw him as a young talent and wanted to get him into the U-16 national team, but the young Tanzanian didn’t have a German passport. Chialo stayed with TuRa Hennef. Many years later, it was Armin Laschet who recognized Chialo’s political potential and brought him into his shadow cabinet as culture and innovation officer. How this story ended is well known.
