The new Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang will hold his first press conference this Tuesday on the occasion of the current annual meeting of the People’s Congress in Beijing. Qin Gang is expected to comment on Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and on his country’s tense relationship with the United States.

As a former State Department spokesman and most recently ambassador to Washington, Qin Gang has extensive experience dealing with the media, but such appearances in China are usually carefully orchestrated.

Above all, the statements on the Ukraine conflict should be followed with great interest. China presented a position paper last month. Internationally, the paper was mostly met with disappointment because it revealed no new initiative to end the war. Since the Russian invasion a year ago, China has backed Russian President Vladimir Putin.
