Free rapid corona tests should initially remain possible until the end of February 2023 – but on a smaller scale than before. According to a draft regulation by the Federal Ministry of Health, there should still be free “citizen tests” at test centers before visits to clinics and nursing homes. This should also remain possible for tests with which you can “test yourself free” after a corona infection with a certificate.

Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) said on Tuesday: “This winter, too, we have to protect patients and those in need of care from corona infection in particular.” Rapid antigen tests therefore remained free for staff in medical facilities and for visitors to hospitals, rehabilitation and care facilities.

According to the draft, several citizen tests, which are currently possible with an additional payment of three euros out of pocket, will no longer be available at state expense in the future – for example before going to concerts, family celebrations or visiting older people. The previous regulations expire on Friday. The new ones are said to be limited to February 28, 2023. At the same time, payments for test providers are to be reduced.
