On Friday, former Vice President Mike Pence issued his strongest ever break from Donald Trump. He refuted a claim made his old boss and clarified that he did not have the right to reverse the 2020 election results.
“There are some in our party that believe that as the presiding Officer over the joint session, Congress, I had unilateral authority to reject Electoral College ballots. “And I heard this week that Donald Trump claimed I had the power to “overturn the election,” Pence told a conservative audience at a Federalist Society event held in Florida.
Pence stated that Trump was wrong and that there is no more anti-American idea than the notion that one person can elect the American president.
He reiterated to conservatives that he did not have the right to reverse the results of the election under the Constitution. The former vice president is widely believed to be a presidential hopeful. He acknowledged that he understood the “dismay many feel about last year’s election” and said that Vice President Kamala Harris would not be able to reverse the results “when they beat us in 2024.”
These remarks are coming after Trump routinely criticizes Pence for certifying election results following the Jan. 6 attack at the Capitol. In a statement earlier this week , the former president stated that Pence may have attempted to reverse the results of the election by revising the count of electoral votes.
