The number of war refugees entering Germany from Ukraine continues to decline. According to the Central Register of Foreigners, around 19,300 people entered Germany in April.
In May, around 15,600 people came to Germany in connection with the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. In the first three months of this year, a total of around 81,600 entries from Ukraine were recorded in the register. The numbers do not show how many people from Ukraine have left Germany since the beginning of the year to travel to their home country or to another EU country despite the war.
Receptivity is a concern of the municipalities
While the number of war refugees arriving from Ukraine is steadily declining, the proportion of asylum seekers from other countries among those seeking protection is increasing, said Middelberg, who, as deputy chairman of the Union faction, is also responsible for budget and finance and local politics. The concerns of the municipalities “regarding an end to the absorption capacity” were becoming more and more urgent.
It is all the more important “that the federal government does not further soften the asylum compromise that has now been formulated among the EU countries,” demanded Middelberg. Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) should ensure that the compromise is implemented quickly, “so that the number of asylum arrivals in Germany can finally decrease”.
War refugees from Ukraine are accepted in the EU states without having to apply for asylum. According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf), 125,556 people applied for asylum in Germany for the first time in the first five months of this year. That was almost 77 percent more than in the same period last year. Most of those seeking protection came from Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey.
