One day before British King Charles III visits Hamburg, climate activists from the Last Generation group and his wife Camilla spray-painted City Hall orange. They distributed the paint filled in fire extinguishers on Thursday morning at the main portal on Rathausmarkt, as the group announced and dpa reporters confirmed.

The royal couple, accompanied by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender, want to sign the city’s golden book on Friday at 1.30 p.m. in the town hall. Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) sharply condemned the color attack. In the morning, a cleaning company began to use steam jets to remove the paint from the sand and granite stone walls and the forged gate grille.

A police spokesman said residence bans had been issued against the two 19 and 24-year-old activists. There are no grounds for detention against the two, who the police already know from the recent Elbe bridge blockade. Because the paint can be removed from the wall without any major problems, there has been no damage to property according to initial findings.

With their action, the activists wanted Mayor Tschentscher to campaign for the federal government to set up a social council. In the opinion of the activists, citizens from all over Germany should develop a plan on how the Federal Republic can phase out the use of fossil raw materials by 2030.
