Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke (Greens) has criticized the blockade actions by climate demonstrators in Berlin as of little help for climate protection. “On the one hand, I understand when people take to the streets for climate protection and also criticize governments for not doing enough,” said Lemke on Tuesday on the sidelines of an appointment in Küstrin on the Polish border.

But she fears that these actions will not help climate protection in the long term. “I fear that frustration and anger among the population will increase in parallel with anger and frustration about insufficient climate protection”. In the end, no productive solution would be supported in this way, said Lemke.

According to the police, there were 42 street blockades by climate demonstrators in Berlin on Monday. Around 700 police officers should also be on duty throughout the city on Tuesday to prevent such actions.
