Frederik has an exciting day ahead of him: on Sunday he rose from crown prince to king. He and his family caused emotional scenes on the palace balcony of Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen in the afternoon. They presented themselves as a strong unit. But part of the Danish royal family was missing: Frederik’s brother, Prince Joachim, along with his wife and children. In the evening, however, the palace released a video with footage that takes a look behind the scenes. And Joachim also appears briefly there.
The clip on the royal family’s official Instagram page shows, among other things, how the new king prepares for his big appearance. Breathe out and in deeply again and then Frederik X. steps in front of the waiting masses. You can also see how his wife Mary arrives later. The recordings also show Frederik’s four children, who initially follow the proceedings on the balcony from a hall. And then Joachim, Frederik’s younger brother, is also briefly in the picture.
He stands in the palace in uniform and with a sash and watches from there as his brother is cheered by the crowd. That Prince Joachim left his new adopted home of Washington, D.C. alone, without his family. It had already been revealed in advance that who would be traveling to the historic event. Tensions arose among the Danish royals after the now resigned Queen Margrethe II had withdrawn the royal titles from Joachim’s children.
The Danes were also able to take a quick look at the prince in Copenhagen yesterday: after the proclamation, he quickly drove in a limousine from Christiansborg to Amalienborg Palace. He waved to those waiting. Joachim will not stay in his homeland for long: it is said that he will leave directly after the reception that begins today at 10 a.m. to mark the change of throne in Parliament.
Queen Margrethe II surprised her subjects by announcing her resignation in her traditional New Year’s address on December 31st. She also announced the date for this on the occasion: January 14th, exactly 52 years after her accession to the throne.
