The US military said it shot down 12 attack drones and five missiles fired by the Houthi rebels in Yemen in the south of the Red Sea. Among other things, F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter aircraft from a US aircraft carrier group were in use.
No ship in the area was damaged and there was no knowledge of any injuries, the US Regional Command for the Middle East (Centcom) said on the X platform, formerly Twitter. The Houthis fired the kamikaze drones, three anti-ship ballistic missiles and two cruise missiles over a period of about ten hours.
The Shiite rebels from Yemen had recently announced that they had attacked, among other things, a merchant ship. A statement from the pro-Iranian group said the crew of the MSC United had ignored several warnings. The ship was then attacked with missiles. It initially remained unclear whether there were any injuries or damage.
Houthis claim further attacks
In their statement, the Houthis also claimed further attacks on Israel. “A number of drones” were fired at the area around Eilat in southern Israel and other targets “in occupied Palestine,” it said. The Israeli military said on Tuesday that it had intercepted an enemy air object in the Red Sea area that was fired towards Israel. According to military circles, Egypt’s air defense also shot down a drone near the holiday resort of Dahab on the Red Sea.
Since the outbreak of the Gaza war, the Houthis have repeatedly attacked Israel with drones and rockets, among other things. Recently, they have repeatedly attacked ships in the Red Sea – one of the most important shipping routes for world trade, which leads to the Suez Canal.
