The government of the Christian Democratic South Tyrolean People’s Party (SVP) ensured stability for decades. She had always sharply differentiated herself from the post-fascists in Italy. The unexpectedly poor election result of 34.5 percent for the party led by Arno Kompatscher in the parliamentary elections in the fall now seals the demise of the “collective party”. Because: The SVP is now entering into an alliance with three right-wing parties. The predominantly German-speaking region is in shock.
