Fashion giant Saint Laurent has achieved a small coup: the French fashion manufacturer has brought music icon Diana Ross on board for its spring campaign. In the campaign images, the singer poses in a tight-fitting black dress, her darkly made-up eyes matching her natural Afro curls. As is typical for YSL, the photos by photographer David Sims are in black and white.

The enthusiastic reactions are piling up in the comments under Saint Laurent’s post on Instagram. “That’s power! Yes, she’s an icon, but she defines time! When women no longer have an expiration date,” writes stylist Maria Cunier. “What a perfect choice,” another user praises the fashion giant from France. And Diana Ross’ daughter has already reacted. On her own Instagram channel, Tracee Ellis Ross shared a photo of the campaign and wrote: “My mom is fire! I hope to age like that too.”

At 79, Diana Ross is one of the older campaign models. In the past, other fashion companies have advertised with celebrities from the older age group. Actress Dame Maggie Smith (89 years old) recently posed for Loewe, and food author Mary Berry (88 years old) was photographed for Burberry. Saint Laurent brought Catherine Deneuve to his side in 2021.

However, the cooperation between Ross and YSL does not come as a complete surprise. Especially in the 1970s, the Supremes icon regularly wore creations from the French house. Designer Tom Ford dedicated his 2003 Saint Laurent collection to the Supremes and Ross.

But the music icon didn’t just cause a stir over the decades with her fashion. Before the now 79-year-old celebrated success with the Supremes and as a solo artist, she attended a beauty school in her hometown of Detroit. This had, among other things, an influence on her many experimental hairstyles. Ross wore short and longer bobs, Jackie Kennedy bouffants and wigs. From the 1970s onwards, she was primarily seen with her Afro – one of her trademarks to this day.
