Prince Christian, who will most likely one day be King of Denmark, celebrated his 18th birthday on Sunday. At lunchtime, the eldest son of Crown Prince Frederik (55) and Crown Princess Mary (51) appeared on the balcony of the family palace at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen.
With his parents, his grandmother Queen Margarethe II (83) and his younger siblings Isabella (16), Josephine and Vincent (both 12), he waved to numerous well-wishers on the palace square. The crowd, waving Danish flags, sang a birthday serenade and shouted “Hurray.” A military band also played.
In the evening, the Queen also invited guests to a large gala dinner in honor of her grandson. Young people from all over the Danish kingdom were expected to attend – from Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. The celebration was to take place in a ballroom at Christiansborg Palace, which was once the royal residence and is now, among other things, the seat of the Danish Parliament.
Prince Christian is second in line to the Danish throne after his father Frederik. For the high school student, the fact that he has now reached the age of majority means, among other things, that he will take on new tasks: The prince is scheduled to take part in a meeting with the government on November 14th, at which he will make a commitment to upholding the Danish constitution. He can then be appointed as a “rigsforstander” – an official representative of the Queen.
