The heatwave conditions that have been plaguing New Delhi are set to make a comeback after a brief respite caused by recent rain and storms. Residents of the capital can expect temperatures to rise once again starting on April 16 as the influence of a western disturbance diminishes.
Just last week, Delhi experienced a scorching heatwave that lasted for three consecutive days, with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung, the city’s base station. The sweltering conditions persisted on April 10, leaving residents to endure warm nights for two days straight.
However, relief finally arrived on Thursday evening in the form of rain and gusty winds, followed by a severe thunderstorm on Friday evening that helped keep temperatures in check over the weekend. Despite the temporary reprieve, the maximum temperature on Saturday was still recorded at 35.2 degrees Celsius, just one degree below normal, while the minimum temperature dropped to 19 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal.
Looking ahead, a Meteorological official warned that both day and night temperatures are expected to see a slight increase starting from Sunday. By April 16, the city is bracing for another bout of heatwave conditions that could last until April 18.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Sunday’s maximum temperature is projected to range between 36 and 38 degrees Celsius, but could potentially spike to 40-42 degrees Celsius by mid-April. The IMD anticipates a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 3-5 degrees Celsius over the next few days.
The IMD classifies a day as a heatwave when the maximum temperature exceeds 4.5 degrees above normal and reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius, or touches 45 degrees Celsius or higher. A ‘severe’ heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature surpasses 6.5 degrees above normal.
Despite the looming heatwave, Delhi’s air quality has managed to remain in the ‘moderate’ category with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 164. While conditions are expected to remain ‘moderate’ on Sunday, the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi has issued a warning that air quality may deteriorate to the ‘poor’ category by Monday and Tuesday.
Expert Insights on Heatwave Conditions
In light of the impending heatwave, experts emphasize the importance of staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and taking necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. Dr. Sharma, a prominent meteorologist, stresses the significance of monitoring one’s health during extreme heat conditions, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and young children.
Impact on Daily Life and Activities
The return of heatwave conditions is likely to impact various aspects of daily life in Delhi, from outdoor activities to commuting. As temperatures soar, residents may need to adjust their routines and schedules to cope with the intense heat. The resurgence of high temperatures could also lead to an increase in energy consumption as people rely on cooling systems to stay comfortable.
As Delhi braces for another round of scorching weather, it is essential for residents to stay informed, take necessary precautions, and prioritize their health and well-being. By staying vigilant and prepared, individuals can navigate the challenges posed by the heatwave conditions and ensure their safety during this period of extreme weather.
