In a bustling press conference at the Dasoha Mahamane of Sharana Basaveshwara Samsthana in Kalaburagi, Afzalpur MLA M.Y. Patil, surrounded by eminent Lingayat leaders, unveiled exciting plans for the upcoming Basava Jayanti Celebration event. The event, set to take place on April 29 at the Sharana Basaveshwara Jatra Maidan, promises to be a grand affair dedicated to honoring the life and legacy of Basavanna, the revered 12th-century poet, philosopher, and saint who founded the Lingayat tradition.
Setting the Stage for a Spectacular Celebration
Painting a vivid picture of the festivities, Mr. Patil revealed that over 25,000 fervent followers of Basavanna are expected to partake in the event. The celebration will kick off with a spirited car rally on April 27, followed by a women’s bike rally, leading up to the main highlight – a public meeting on April 29. But the revelry doesn’t stop there. On April 30, the government is slated to host additional Basava Jayanti celebrations near the Basavanna statue at Jagat Circle in the city. The day will culminate in a magnificent procession starting at 4 p.m. from Nagareshwar School to Jagat Circle, showcasing artists in elaborate costumes embodying the Sharanas, as well as captivating cultural performances paying tribute to Basavanna and his profound Vachana revolution.
Uniting Basavanna’s Followers in a Spirit of Harmony
Emphasizing the spirit of unity among Basavanna’s devotees, Mr. Patil highlighted the collaborative efforts of Ministers, MLAs, former MLAs, and community leaders from all walks of life, transcending party lines to ensure the event’s resounding success. He underscored the significance of celebrating Basava Jayanti on a single platform as a means to imbue people’s hearts with Basava’s core principles of Kayaka (physical labor) and Dasoha (feeding the needy). The event aims to promote Sharana Dharma through Vachana literature, showcasing the collective strength of Basava’s followers as a cohesive social unit.
A Glimpse into the Festive Preparations
To gear up for the grand public meeting, a series of meetings have been scheduled across various locales, including Aland, Afzalpur, Jewargi, Chitapur, Sedam, Chincholi, and all 51 wards of the city. These gatherings, spearheaded by current and former MLAs, as well as municipal council members, are poised to ensure the event unfolds seamlessly and leaves a lasting impact on all attendees.
Celebrating Basava’s Enduring Legacy
Adding an enriching layer to the celebrations, Mr. Patil announced the release of a special book containing 50 selected Vachanas for daily recitation, further deepening the spiritual connection to Basavanna’s teachings. The event promises to be a cultural extravaganza steeped in tradition, camaraderie, and a shared reverence for the timeless legacy of Basavanna.
