The Socialist Party and United We may have agreed that the subject of Religion —mostly catholic faith, but also with teachers, evangelicals, and muslims— stop counting to make the media in the notes and have an elective (mirror) for those students who do not opt for it. This rating is usually to upload the score that determines University entrance and scholarships. The decision has soliviantado to teachers and parents of students receiving the subject of Religion, and contented himself at all those who bet on beliefs out of the classroom. With the socialist Governments, Religion was a subject that can be evaluated and alternative (Ethical), but not computaba in the media. But the Law for the Improvement Educational Quality (LOMCE), approved by the PP, without support in 2013, changed the system.
“We believe that Religion is of offer compulsory and free-choice, with an alternative such as Ethics. Because, otherwise, it is not exercised the freedom of families to choose,” says Peter Knight, president of the Confederation of National Catholic Parents and Parents of Students (CONCAPA). “It is an attack on the teaching and concerted private and has not spoken with the education community.” Knight argues that if Religion, or its alternative, which is not computed in the average “loses its reason of being, each subject must have its specific weight and have that equate”.
The patronal Catholic Schools, the majority, also shows their rejection of the measure. “Speaking of which Religion is voluntary, as if it wasn’t already. It appears that they were trying to deceive the people and should think that 70% of families choose Religion for their children, a thing that you choose to ignore,” argues José María Alvira, secretary-general of Catholic Schools. “Doing the will of We, the minority, and sectarian, with the aquiesencia of Pedro Sanchez that is what is worrying in this and other educational issues,” he says in reference to the continuity of the subsidized school. Alvira does not believe that involve a loss of professors of Religion in their schools because “the parents know the mission statement by enrolling their children.”

Jesus Maria Losada, president of the State Federation of Teachers of Religious Education, speaks at personal title because your group has not met, and it is very hard on your heart: “My reaction is one of total outrage, are taking us back, it’s a lack of respect to our work, only know how to remove value. If it is a subject in the academic system that is of everything and, if you say that you do not want it, it removed all. Because we will fight. It is a betrayal.”
“We want Religion out of the classrooms and this is a first step, so it’s just perfect,” recalls Leticia Cardinal, president of CEAPA, the confederation which brings together the families of public education. “And while not coming out, that at least is given in class of all religions because our centers have a cultural diversity not seen in Religion class”. Historically, muslims and evangelicals spaniards reproach the State — which pays the teachers, although they are appointed by the Church— that do not hire enough teachers of their confessions despite having demand.
Comisiones Obreras, the union of a majority of the education system, says in a statement that “before the offensive of the ultra-right against the right to education and freedom of education, supported by some regional Governments, there is a need to strengthen the co-education and the affective-sex education. And this is achieved by promoting the secularism of the educational system and returning the religions to the status of an elective course without academic or alternative compulsory”. In Aragon, Asturias, Valencian Community, Extremadura, Asturias and the Balearic islands, the Religion class is in litigation in the courts by the adjustment of schedules after the entry into force of the LOMCE.
The Circle of Spirituality to be Progressive we Can, and the Group Federal Christian Socialists of the PSOE discussed for months on the subject of Religion in the classroom and concluded in a manifesto: “we Say no to a subject of religion in a framework of the confessional, and yes to a subject new to be established in a framework non-denominational, and cultural, with its own entity”. This means to follow the model of Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom, where it is mandatory and “non-denominational, of the religious fact in general and of religions, coupled with an education that is not religious-oriented to recognize and value the spiritual dimension, not patrimonializable exclusively by any religion.”
last April, 60 associations and political groups, We, the United Left, ERC, the Communist Party, the Workers ‘Commissions, Europe Secular, the Students’ Union and the associations, Networks, Christian— agreed to demand that you leave the religion of the schools. Criticized that the classes of “religious indoctrination” is financed with public funds, so called for his removal from all schools, since private schools also receive state funds.
