Despite a slight increase last year, the number of new training contracts was well below the level before the Corona crisis.
A total of 469,900 new training contracts in dual vocational training were concluded, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Tuesday. That was an increase of 0.8 percent over the previous year. In the pre-crisis year of 2019, more than 500,000 young people had started an apprenticeship.
For years, fewer and fewer young people have tended to choose classic training in companies and vocational schools. In 2012, the number of new training contracts was still 544,400.
At the end of 2022, 1.22 million people were in dual vocational training, the Federal Office confirmed further preliminary figures. That was three percent less than a year earlier and a historic low.
Training courses in retail, in offices and in the automotive sector continue to be particularly popular. There was an increase in new contracts in the training area of industry and trade (plus three percent). The craft trades, in which the number of new training contracts in the Corona year 2020 had fallen comparatively weakly, recorded the lowest number of new contracts to date with a minus of two percent. The number of new contracts last year also declined in agriculture, in the public sector, in the liberal professions and in housekeeping.
