In the fight against avoidable food waste, further measures in retail are to be sealed. A binding agreement is to be signed today, as announced by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.

Department head Cem Özdemir (Greens), the Federal Association of the German Food Trade and representatives of wholesale and retail companies want to present a joint “pact against food waste” in Berlin.

The government’s goal is to significantly reduce food waste. To this end, improvements are being sought throughout the chain from harvest to plate. A target agreement for out-of-home catering in the catering trade has already been concluded.

Every year, eleven million tons of food end up in the garbage in Germany, as the government reported to the EU Commission based on data for 2020. The majority, 59 percent, came from private households. Another 17 percent was generated in restaurants and canteens, 15 percent in processing, 7 percent in retail and 2 percent in agriculture.
