Betty Glover is already 91 years old and a great-grandmother. But in her old age, the woman from the US state of Oregon is still working – according to her own statements, she has been working uninterruptedly for seven decades. She has been at the checkout in a supermarket for ten years, before that she was employed by a roofing company. At an age when others have long since enjoyed their retirement.
But Betty Glover’s financial resources were not sufficient to retire. So she worked on and on – until her health finally let her down more and more. As her eyesight began to deteriorate, the job became increasingly difficult for her. So Glover tried to raise funds for her retirement. And had resounding success with it.
She launched a fundraising campaign on the GoFundMe platform. “In order to retire, I have to pay off the trailer I live in. If I can do that, I will have enough to pay the rent for the parking space, the groceries and the medicine I need,” she explained her situation. And in fact there were hundreds of complete strangers willing to support the old woman financially.
Glover had originally stated a goal of $40,000, which should be enough to cover her costs. In the meantime, the sum has been exceeded by far, more than 70,000 US dollars (equivalent to 63,000 euros) have been raised so far.
“I’m overwhelmed by the support and generosity,” said Betty Glover. May 1st will be her last day at the supermarket. After that, she will hopefully have many more years to enjoy her well-deserved retirement – even if she faces a big change: “I don’t know anything other than work.” Nevertheless, she now wants to spend more time with her grandchildren.
