According to a report by the International Labor Organization, hundreds of thousands of people lost their jobs after the severe earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. New jobs urgently need to be created, otherwise there is a risk of poverty and child labor, the ILO reported on Tuesday.

In the affected provinces in Turkey, at least 658,000 workers could no longer earn a living. More than 150,000 workplaces are no longer usable. Net labor income is likely to have fallen by a total of $150 million (139 billion euros) a month. In neighboring Syria, which has already been badly hit after twelve years of civil war, 170,000 workers have lost their jobs because of the earthquake, some or all of which fed around 725,000 people. The ILO estimated the loss of income at $5.7 million a month.

Among other things, the ILO wants to support companies in the affected regions so that they can offer jobs quickly. Two earthquakes shook southeast Turkey and northern Syria on February 6. A total of around 57,000 people lost their lives. Millions became homeless.
