Less than five months has lasted in office the one who was called not only to be the number two of the Ministry of Finance but also the senior key position in the design of the long-awaited tax reform that the Government has committed to with Brussels for the first quarter of 2023. Canarian Héctor Izquierdo, Secretary of State for the Treasury since last January, when he replaced Inés Bardón, will leave office in the coming days to become the Government Commissioner for the Reconstruction of the Island of La Palma, according to El Diario has advanced this Monday and government sources have confirmed.

Izquierdo, with a long career as an auditor but with little experience in the strictly fiscal field, has passed through the Secretary of State without penalty of glory, according to sources from the world of tax advice and consulting.

He did not even want to get involved in a relevant way in the main milestone of his area throughout these weeks in which he has held the position: the presentation of the White Paper for Tax Reform, the document that, according to the Government, it committed to with Brussels should serve as a basis for the tax reform that should be addressed at the start of next year.

The departure of Izquierdo leaves a key position in the Ministry up in the air, on which the revenue chapter of the Budget depends, the powerful Directorate General of Taxes and the definition of the reforms to be applied in the tax system. The appointment of Héctor Izquierdo generated a certain concern in all corners of the fiscal field that now await the appointment of a personality of greater specific weight to direct a period that seems key to defining the tax system of the future. That appointment could take place this Tuesday in the Council of Ministers.
