Just like the 9-euro ticket, the tank discount is valid until August 31st. After that, the prices at the gas stations will continue to rise significantly, according to the estimates of experts. Wouldn’t it be worth storing fuel in stock? Not really.
Because the permitted amount of fuel that can be stored in Germany is precisely specified. Due to the risk of explosion, a maximum of 20 liters of petrol may be stored in garages. Although the permitted storage quantity of diesel is 200 liters, it does not make sense to store a larger quantity of fuel due to its short shelf life. Even in airtight packaging, diesel only keeps for a few months. Using stale diesel clogs the vehicle’s filters and fuel system.
In principle, fuel may only be stored in closed, non-flammable and unbreakable canisters. ADAC spokeswoman Melanie Mikulla told the MDR: “Fuel can leak. That would of course be a danger to the environment again and there is a certain risk to health if the containers are not tight. Then toxic gases and vapors can escape and You’re definitely risking your health.” If you still want to store petrol for a longer period of time, you should buy a hazardous materials cabinet, advises Mikulla.
In addition, tenants should make sure that the storage of petrol or diesel is even permitted according to the rental agreement. Its storage is often prohibited by contract. Otherwise, a maximum of 20 liters of flammable liquids may be stored in a basement. It should be noted here that the quantity given refers to the entire area of the cellar and not to the individual cellar compartments. In the apartment you can even keep only one liter of such liquids.
So if you want to transport petrol or diesel from the gas station with a private vehicle, you must also observe the prescribed maximum quantity; you can transport a maximum of 60 liters. The fuel must be stowed in a reserve container that has UN or reserve fuel canister approval (RKK). ADAC recommends storing the fuel as far away from the vehicle occupants as possible. For safety reasons, however, no more than ten liters of fuel should be transported in the car.
On Monday (August 29), a liter of Super E10 cost an average of 1.777 euros nationwide and a liter of diesel 2.076 euros, as the ADAC announced on request. “Prices have been rising gradually since around mid-August,” says ADAC press spokeswoman Katharina Luca to the star. “We’re seeing a little more every day and it’s always going up.”
According to an evaluation published on Tuesday by the Essen economic research institute RWI, the drought in Germany and the associated low level of the Rhine are driving up fuel prices. Diesel is particularly affected due to high transport costs. But without the tank discount, the prices would be even higher.
In the night from Wednesday to Thursday, the tank discount ends and with it the reduction in energy tax, which arithmetically could result in a price increase of around 35 cents per liter of petrol and 17 cents per liter of diesel. However, the ADAC does not believe in a sharp increase in prices at the gas stations, “because we do believe that the gas station operators are trying to buy cheaper fuel now if possible so that they can continue to offer it and secure a competitive advantage,” says Luca. It is difficult to estimate where the prices will actually go. Refueling the car before the tank discount expires should therefore be worthwhile considering the current petrol and diesel prices.
