The telecommunications provider Telefónica Deutschland (O2) is making further progress in attracting new customers. In the last quarter of 2023, the number of mobile contract customers rose by 284,000, as the German subsidiary of the Spanish Telefónica group announced on Wednesday. That was slightly more than in the same period last year.
Compared to Vodafone, O2 has a clear lead: the competitor reported an increase in mobile contract customers of 95,000 in the final quarter of the year. Telekom has not yet presented any figures for the period. All providers advertise advances in the 5G network. At O2, household coverage is 95 percent.
Telefónica Germany boss Markus Haas also presented the annual figures for 2023. Sales increased by 4.7 percent to around 8.6 billion euros. However, this increase is largely due to the fact that more expensive smartphones were sold in O2 stores. The so-called service revenue and thus the core business in mobile communications rose by 2.7 percent to around 5.9 billion euros.
The company also grew in the landline network, which is more of a side business for O2 and is based on leasing connection capacities from other companies. All in all, the operating result (Oibda) rose by 3.1 percent to 2.6 billion euros in 2023, adjusted for special effects. In his own words, Haas sees continued strong growth dynamics at O2.
