Despite the increasing damage caused by natural catastrophes in Germany, many homeowners are making little or no financial provision for the potentially high damage, according to a new survey.
The average saving for important repairs and maintenance on your own home is around 17,000 euros, as determined by the survey institute Innofact on behalf of the Verivox portal. More than a third – 35 percent – of homeowners even stated that they had not saved any money at all for their own house.
On the occasion of the second anniversary of the flood disaster in western Germany, Innofact surveyed 1017 homeowners who live in their own property and who decide or have a say in taking out insurance in their household.
According to this, 68 percent of homeowners are currently in favor of introducing compulsory insurance against natural hazards, a good six months after the disaster it was still 79 percent in the previous survey in February 2022. According to the survey, only 59 percent have actually taken out an elementary policy.
At least 185 people died in the flood disaster of July 14/15. Several thousand houses had been destroyed. According to evaluations by Munich Re and other insurers, storm and storm damage is increasing in Europe as well as in several other regions of the world. The increase is not linear from year to year, but severe storms and floods are more frequent than they were a few decades ago.
