In terms of the fight against waste, the brand Mcdonald’s seems to be well away from the good students. But, as much as it heals. Accused, for France, to make light of the recycling of its waste, the fast food chain had been forced to sign, along with a dozen of its major competitors, to sign a “contract of engagement of the fast food to sort their waste”, including a timetable of three years, with the ministry of the ecological Transition.

So, last November, Mcdonald’s announced the introduction of a new packaging in all of its restaurants in Europe by the end of 2020 for the McFlurry, a frozen dessert in which the pot disposable is currently topped with a thick plastic circle that aims to save more than 1,200 tons of plastic a year on the continent. The group also intends to deploy a new lid for cold drinks, fibre, made from “certified sources 100 % sustainable and recycled materials”, which does not involve the use of a straw, the use of which will be banned in Europe as of 2021.

Draw on social networks
To accompany these measures, Mcdonald’s is offering a communication campaign that has already attracted users from austria, to whom it is addressed. No new recipe or toy outstanding, but the creation of a line of swimwear, a swim shorts and a one-piece bathing suit with stripes of red and yellow, with the effigy of the straw, emblematic of the brand.

These pieces, which are for the time being available for the winners of a prize draw launched on the social networks of Mcdonald’s in Austria, are obviously special. They have been produced, as explained in the newspaper Die Press, from a fabric composed of straws in recycled plastic and plastic waste found in the oceans. Mcdonald’s is hoping to dispose of part of its stock of straws unusable in the future because prohibited. The success of the operation could extend beyond the austrian borders and be seen on the beaches of Europe this summer.
