Leftists and liberals are a thorn in Peter Thiel’s side from an early age. When he hits the campus of the conservative Stanford University in 1985, he is horrified: instead of academic calm and other nerds, the then 18-year-old encounters fellow students who would rather sunbathe on the terrace of the dormitory than struggle through lectures. Thiel hates this liberal exuberance. So at the weekends he flees back home to his parents in his old VW Beetle.
