The alarm level of the gas emergency plan declared by the Federal Ministry of Economics in June 2022 remains in place. “Because of further precautionary measures, we consider this to be necessary,” said a ministry spokeswoman at the request of the German Press Agency.
In particular, it is about the replenishment of the natural gas storage with a view to the supply situation in winter 2023/24. “Accordingly, the EU Gas Saving Ordinance was also extended at EU level until the end of March 2024.” This underscores the fact that precautionary measures are still required nationally, which are linked to maintaining the crisis level.
Federal Network Agency: Gas supply remains stable
The natural gas storage facilities in Germany were a good 67 percent full on Wednesday morning, and the trend is rising. Certain filling levels are prescribed towards autumn. First, the storage tanks must be 75 percent full by September 1st, and then 95 percent by November 1st. The Ines gas storage association recently assumed that the storage facilities would be 100 percent full by September 1st.
The alert level was declared on June 23, 2022 against the background of the escalating gas crisis. It is the second of three warning levels.
The Federal Network Agency still considers the gas supply in Germany to be stable. “The security of supply is guaranteed,” it said on Thursday in the daily gas situation report. A gas shortage could have been prevented last winter. The preparation for the winter of 2023/2024 remains a “key” challenge. “That’s why economical gas consumption remains important.”
