SPD leader Saskia Esken has warned against badmouthing the economic situation in Germany. “We must not let ourselves be talked into a depression that slows down the willingness to invest and innovate,” said Esken ntv.de. “I think this is a valley of opportunities, an opportunity to reflect on our strengths that support our economy.”

The German economy is in the doldrums. To cushion the consequences, Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) has proposed almost 50 tax policy measures intended to relieve the economy, the so-called Growth Opportunities Act.

From Esken’s point of view, however, important aspects are missing. ‘Taxing innovation is a good way to go, but that alone will not suffice and must not just be related to industry,’ she said. A subsidized electricity price for energy-intensive companies and more public investment in infrastructure are also needed. “All of this has to be put together in one package,” demanded Esken.
