No other competitor is as close to the German electric star VW ID3 as the MG4 from the Chinese SAIC group. The Asians with their British namesake are increasingly diversifying their engine portfolio more cleverly than their competitor from Wolfsburg. After the solid basic model, the all-wheel drive sports version of the MG4 Xpower with 320 kW / 435 HP / 600 Nm caused a huge stir. But the new MG4 Trophy Extended Range package is likely to be the best choice for many interested parties, as it combines good driving performance with a range befitting its status.

The reason for the more than brisk performance is the slightly more powerful electric motor on the rear axle, which cheerfully fuels the almost 1.8 tonne rear-wheel drive car with its 180 kW / 245 hp and 350 Nm maximum torque. The basic versions of the MG4, on the other hand, have to make do with a manageable 125 kW / 170 HP or 150 kW / 204 HP. The additional vitamin boost is not only evident in the image sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds, but also at a top speed of at least 180 km/h. Not a particularly impressive value for a compact model with almost 250 hp, but at least more than some competitors, where propulsion sometimes stops at 160 or even 150 km/h. At full throttle in the left lane, the digital speedometer shows at least 190 km/h. You can live with that. Precisely because the power delivery is impressive even at higher speeds and goes well with the tight set-up package of the electric four-wheeler. However, this only applies to a limited extent to the steering, because although it is as smooth as it is precise, it does not offer good feedback from the road. On the other hand, it’s great: if you turn to the maximum, you can turn the MG4 even in narrow streets. The cockpit is clear, the seats are well contoured and there is plenty of space. The cargo space is almost between 363 and 1,165 liters.

However, the 4.29 meter long MG4 Trophy Extended Range not only shines when sprinting or on the highway, but also with a range that makes you almost forget the disadvantages of an electric model. The battery pack in the underbody with its capacity of 77 kWh, together with a standard consumption of 16.5 kWh / 100 kilometers, ensures a delayed charging stop. The compact electric model only has to go back to the charging station after 520 kilometers. If you travel alone in the city center, you can even cover more than 700 kilometers. However, after a successful journey, refueling could be a little quicker, as a maximum charging speed of 144 kW is fine in everyday life, but is not very impressive. From 10 to 80 percent battery capacity takes just under 40 minutes. That could always be less. A little less would also be a temptation when it comes to price, with a base price of an impressive 45,990 euros, the version with a large battery pack and correspondingly more range is just 1,000 euros cheaper than the 435 hp all-wheel drive athlete the MG4 Xpower, which should not only attract curve hunters, because all-wheel drive and a top speed of 200 km/h are valid arguments.
