North Rhine-Westphalia’s Transport Minister Oliver Krischer described the price stability for the Deutschlandticket for 2024 as good news.
However, the Green politician also said on WDR 5’s “Morgenecho”: “I wouldn’t make a forecast for the next few years.” The transport ministers of the federal states decided in a special conference on Monday that the price of 49 euros per month for the Germany ticket should remain stable throughout 2024.
However, the prices for the following years after 2024 for this subscription ticket were deliberately not set at the conference, reported Krischer, who is chairman of the Conference of Transport Ministers. One cannot say that the monthly price of 49 euros will always remain the same even after 2024. Krischer referred, among other things, to the inflation factor.
D-Ticket is used by around ten million people
The Deutschlandticket, introduced in May 2023, is valid for nationwide travel on local and regional public transport and is currently used by around ten million people, according to the Association of German Transport Companies. According to Krischer, more and more work is being done on procedures to make price determination more automated in the future – so that there are not major political discussions or the fundamental question about the Germany ticket is asked every time.
From the perspective of Bavaria’s Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter, the agreement between the states to keep the Germany ticket at 49 euros until the end of 2024 is unlikely to be repeated. “The price will not be sustainable in the long term, but it will not rise exorbitantly,” said the CSU politician on Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bayern 2 Radiowelt am Morgen). The fact that around 10.5 customers have used the offer so far is not a great success. “Much higher usage figures were expected,” said Bernreiter. In order to continue to finance the ticket in the future, around a million new users are needed.
