Millions of people with statutory health insurance will have to pay more in 2023. Because more than every second cash register increases the additional contribution at the turn of the year. More than 50 of the 97 health insurance companies have announced increases in contributions, according to the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds, more than 85 percent of health insurance fund members are affected.
According to the Kassenverband, the additional contribution increases on average by 0.2 percentage points to 1.5 percent. In individual cases, however, the increases are different, as an evaluation by Check24 shows. Accordingly, 59 funds require between 0.1 and 0.7 percentage points more contribution (see table at the end of the article). Three health insurance companies, on the other hand, even reduce the additional contribution. 23 funds are keeping the contribution constant and a dozen funds have not yet commented on a possible increase (as of December 27).
In addition to the additional contribution, all insured persons pay the uniform general contribution rate of 14.6 percent. Both the general contribution rate and the additional contribution are borne equally by the employer and the employee. The self-employed pay the full contribution on their own.
The increases in additional contributions cost employees with income above the contribution assessment limit up to an additional 347 euros per year, Check24 has calculated. Self-employed people who also have to shoulder the employer’s share pay up to twice as much. However, this is the extreme case, with lower increases and/or lower income it is correspondingly less.
What is new is that consumers must actively inform themselves in order to find out about the premium increase. Because until the end of June 2023, health insurance companies will not have to inform their members by letter about increases in contributions as usual. This allows a law to save postage costs. The funds only have to announce the increase on their website or in their member magazine. As soon as that happens, you can quickly find the increase on various comparison sites.
If the health insurance increases the additional contribution, insured persons have a special right of termination. This applies until the end of the month in which the increase takes effect and includes a period of two months. If you have to pay a higher additional contribution on January 1, 2023, you can cancel until the end of January and insure yourself with the new health insurance company from April (in the meantime you have to pay the higher contribution).
In principle, you can also cancel at any time, regardless of the special right of termination, provided you have been with the old health insurance company for at least 12 months. A period of two months to the end of the month also applies to this regular change of insurer.
Termination and change of health insurance work like this: You choose a new health insurance company and fill out a membership application. This is usually done online via the website. The new desired health insurance company then takes over the cancellation of the old one, you don’t have to cancel it yourself. It is advisable not to wait until the last day of the month to approach the new cash register with a change request, so that the change can be made on time. If you want to change because of a contribution increase, you should write that so that the new health insurance company meets the deadline for the special right of termination.
However, the contribution should not be the only criterion when choosing the fund. If you regularly use certain additional services, you are in good hands with a health insurance company that takes care of them. The service or bonus programs also play a role for many insured persons.
