With around 651,000 visitors, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s largest zoo in Rostock almost reached the number from the pre-Corona year 2019 last year. At that time, only around 1,200 more visitors were registered, as the zoo announced at its annual press conference on Friday. The zoo team has big plans for 2023, said zoo director Antje Angeli. Rostock’s new mayor Eva-Maria Kröger (left) described the zoo as a “jewel” and assured Angeli of her support.

Around 6500 animals and around 500 species live in the Zoological Garden. This year there will be more: the Australian jumping mice have already arrived and white-nosed coatis will soon be moving into the South America house. Angeli particularly emphasized the red pandas, which are endangered in their species and for which the mountain goat enclosure is currently being converted. The largest construction project is the new construction of the seal facility with a grandstand and panoramic windows for an unobstructed underwater view.

The zoo also reported a positive development in annual tickets. At the beginning of 2023, 23,077 annual ticket holders were recorded. Around 500 private individuals and companies also supported the zoo with animal sponsorships.

There will be some gastronomic changes at the zoo this year. The new managing director and tenant Manfred Schumann promised event gastronomy combined with green gastronomy and products from the region. In addition, the gastronomic facilities should be disposable to avoid waste. The aim is the Blue Angel environmental seal.
