The seven-day incidence of coronavirus infections in Munich continues to only go in one direction: upwards. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gives the value this Thursday as 696 (rounded values), after 547 the day before and 256 a week ago. As everywhere, the number of unreported cases is significantly higher, since by far not all infected people have an official PCR test carried out.
The reason for the rapid increase is probably the Oktoberfest, which has been attracting millions of people from all over the world to Munich’s Theresienwiese since September 17th and until October 3rd. There is no obligation to wear masks on the site or in the tents, and visits are also possible regardless of vaccination or recovery status. Tests are also not mandatory. Nevertheless, the connection between increasing corona numbers and the Wiesn cannot be proven. This would require almost complete contact tracing, which has not been done for a long time, but: There was also an increase in the incidences in the corresponding regions at other folk festivals after they started.
Those responsible had predicted the Wiesn wave in advance – and also priced it in with a view to the immunization rate and the generally milder course of the disease. The expected higher number of sick people will “not overload” the hospitals, for example, the clinic of the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich told the “T-Online” portal before the start of the Oktoberfest.
Although the occupancy of hospital beds with Covid 19 sufferers has been increasing again for some time in Munich, it is still far from the values defined as critical.
The current seven-day incidence of 696 is the highest value recorded for Munich since the end of July. The record in the Bavarian capital is almost 2500 and dates back to February.
The seven-day incidence indicates how many out of 100,000 people were infected with the coronavirus in one week.
According to the RKI, the seven-day incidence in Bavaria this Thursday is 595 (previous day: 538, previous week: 350). There is also an increase here.
For comparison: Across Germany, the seven-day value is currently 410 (previous day: 372, previous week: 305). The nationwide trend is also upwards. According to the RKI, 94 people died within a day in connection with a coronavirus infection.
