Winter came back at the end of February and provided skiing fun in some of the low mountain ranges. Up to 15 centimeters of snow fell on the Kahler Asten in the Sauerland in North Rhine-Westphalia on Saturday night. That said a spokeswoman for the winter sports arena Winterberg. In combination with artificial snow, skiers and tobogganists found good conditions for descents along snow-covered trees due to the fresh snow. The 46 open slopes were correspondingly full, as reported by a dpa reporter.
There was also snow in the heights of the Harz mountains. However, it was windy there during the day and uncomfortable at minus 2 degrees. Ski runs, lifts and cross-country trails were closed. According to the Harz Tourist Association, only a few toboggan runs were open.
Ice showers on Usedom
In Bavaria, according to the German Weather Service, it snowed mainly in the Alps on Saturday morning. In Irschenberg, not far from Lake Tegernsee, about 17 centimeters of fresh snow fell. There should be light snowfall in the Alps without long interruptions until Monday. According to the DWD, between ten and 20 centimeters of fresh snow could be added, in some places even 30 centimeters.
On the island of Usedom, daring people wanted to throw themselves into the ice-cold Baltic Sea for ice bathing. Because of a storm surge warning, there was only an ice shower instead. According to the organizer Tom Müller, around 125 ice bathers came despite the adverse weather conditions, of which a good 40 dared to take the ice shower.
Motorists, on the other hand, had to be prepared for slippery roads. There were no major obstacles. The police in North Rhine-Westphalia reported three accidents within a few minutes in the Rhein-Sieg district due to ice.
