At the start of the week, people in the south-west have to be prepared for sometimes severe heat storms. From Monday noon, the German Weather Service (DWD) expects local lightning and thunder, stormy gusts, hail and potentially heavy rain. It is still very uncertain where exactly it will crash – but thunderstorms could be triggered, especially around the Swabian Jura and the Black Forest, which then move northeast, said a meteorologist from the DWD on Monday.
“It’s nothing dramatic compared to what we can expect in the middle of the week,” he continued. On Wednesday and Thursday in particular, widespread thunderstorms and the potential for severe weather are to be expected. The background is that the greater influence of low pressure leads to a higher risk of thunderstorms almost everywhere in the country. As early as Tuesday night, a larger thunderstorm area, especially in the northwestern half, is expected to cause a lot of rain and wind speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour in places.
Despite the temporarily uncomfortable cooling, the heat remains a factor in the south-west: For Monday, the DWD expected strong heat stress in the Upper Rhine Graben and on the High Rhine. High levels of UV radiation can be expected during the day. The temperatures should therefore selectively exceed the 30-degree mark.
