After the warm Christmas days, the temperatures remain mild. According to forecasts by “Wetter.de”, December 31 could even be the warmest New Year’s Eve since weather records began. However, the weather is also becoming increasingly uncomfortable. Meteorologists expect wind and rain – even stormy gusts cannot be ruled out.

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), a low spur over Central Europe is responsible for the changeable weather. This temporarily brings colder sea air to Germany. Nevertheless, the temperatures climb into the double-digit range in many places. 5 to 11 degrees are to be expected on Wednesday, up to 13 degrees are possible on the Upper Rhine. In the northern half, fresh and gusty south-west to west winds will pick up on Tuesday, along with some stormy gusts on the sea and in the higher mountains.

On Thursday, the temperatures will rise to nine to 15 degrees, but there will also be a cloud cover over Germany. Showery rain falls almost everywhere, only in the east and south-east there is less precipitation. It stays windy. “Storm gusts possible on the North Sea and in the mountains, in the west and north-west even at low altitudes, stormy gusts are possible,” reports the DWD. On Friday the cloud will loosen, precipitation will remain in most parts of the country. The DWD only predicts “rapid cloud cover and the onset of rain” for the west.

On New Year’s Eve, the precipitation spreads in the north, west and initially also in the middle of Germany. In the south and south-east the cloud will loosen again, it will remain dry and sunny at times. According to the DWD, the average temperatures will be 8 to 15 degrees, in the southwest the weather will be exceptionally mild at 15 to 19 degrees. According to “Wetter.de”, the forecasts indicate almost 20 degrees for Freiburg during the day and 12 degrees for various places on New Year’s Eve. If the predictions come true, it would be the warmest December 31 on record.

Apart from that, the weather on New Year’s Eve is changeable to rainy with sometimes gusty winds and stormy winds in the mountains and near the coast. Heavy gusts of wind could blow on higher mountain peaks. Temperatures drop to 2 to 8 degrees. “In the evening and at the turn of the year, the wind decreases only a little, so firing rockets can sometimes be quite dangerous,” warns meteorologist Martin Pscherer in an interview with “Wetter.de”.
