Partly sun, partly precipitation and low temperatures: Holy Week in Germany is characterized by calm, but quite cool weather for the time of year, as meteorologist Sebastian Altnau from the German Weather Service (DWD) announced on Monday in Offenbach. Responsible for this is Hoch Meryem, which spreads cool polar air from north-eastern Europe. According to the forecasts, there can be widespread frost at night, during the day the sun will shine in the first half of the week, especially in the western parts of the country.

On Tuesday it will be mostly clear to cloudy and dry. In the east, the sky is changing to very cloudy. Occasionally there may be some rain or sleet. The temperatures reach between 6 and 10 degrees in the west, in the east it stays a little cooler at 3 to 7 degrees. In addition, moderate winds will blow from north to north-east. On Wednesday night, the values drop to minus 1 to minus 6 degrees, in the southeast even minus 8 degrees can be reached, only on the coasts it remains frost-free.

On Wednesday it will be more cloudy, especially in the eastern half. At times there is sleet or rain and snow in the mountains. According to the DWD, it remains friendly for longer from the Upper to the Lower Rhine and in the direction of the North Sea. In Saxony and Bavaria only 2 to 7 degrees are reached, on the Lower Rhine it gets a little warmer with up to 11 degrees.

On Thursday it will be heavily overcast, especially in the eastern half, and precipitation is expected from eastern Bavaria to Saxony. In the western parts of the country the sun shines longer and it stays dry. From the Lower Rhine to Emsland, up to 13 degrees are possible when the sun is shining, otherwise it stays cooler at 3 to 10 degrees.

And what about the Easter weekend? The general weather situation is not expected to change too much, since Hoch Meryem continues to hold the position over north-eastern Europe, said Altnau. Occasionally there can be short wet phases, but larger amounts of rain are not to be expected. And: “The temperature level increases slowly over the Easter weekend, so that the program for the holidays is more likely to be 10 to 16 degrees.”
