In connection with a hatchet attack in Bergen on the island of Rügen (West Pomerania Rügen), the district court of Stralsund issued an arrest warrant against a suspect. The 59-year-old man is accused of attempted manslaughter, a police spokesman said on Monday in Neubrandenburg. The murder weapon was confiscated.
The incident happened on Friday afternoon in the backyard of an apartment building in Bergen. As the police later announced, the 59-year-old and a 44-year-old man – both Germans – got into an argument for reasons that were previously unknown. The older man is said to have struck the head and upper body of the other man with the axe. However, the 44-year-old was able to avoid it, fled and was unharmed.
Witnesses called the police, who arrested the 59-year-old at the scene. The ax is said to have been found there. At the weekend, the Stralsund public prosecutor applied for an arrest warrant against the suspect, which the responsible judge at the Stralsund District Court also issued. The suspect was taken to jail.
