No points, but the SC Potsdam volleyball players took a lot of worries with them on their way home from Schwerin on Saturday. “If we don’t improve significantly, then we’ll also have a problem in the quarter-finals,” said sports director Toni Rieger on the TV station Sport1 after the 0: 3 (17:25, 18:25, 16:25) loss in the Bundesliga Top game at Schwerin SC. His small glimmer of hope: “In the play-offs it starts again from scratch.”
Even before the last game in the main round on Saturday at home against USC Münster, one thing is certain: SC Potsdam will only make it into the quarter-finals as third in the table. The MTV Stuttgart and the women from Schwerin can no longer be caught by the Brandenburgers.
The Potsdam team have now lost six of their last seven competitive games in three competitions (Champions League, Bundesliga, Cup). No question: the team is in a deep crisis just before the crucial phase of the championship. In the sold-out arena in Schwerin with 2169 spectators, the Supercup winner presented himself without self-confidence, without bite and without clarity in many actions.
“We were very, very far away from what Schwerin offered,” said Rieger, disappointed. His fear: “Such a game also gets stuck in people’s heads.” The opponent demonstrated how things could be done differently. “All of us were “on fire”,” rejoiced Schwerin’s Libera Anna Pogany afterwards.
SC Potsdam seemed to have gotten out of their lows in good time before the game. Just two weeks earlier, the team had managed a hope-giving 3-0 win at VC Wiesbaden. Four days without training gave the players an opportunity to collect themselves. Nine days of concentrated preparation followed. The result? “I can’t even remember when we ever performed like this in Schwerin,” Rieger stated.
