A counteroffensive by the Ukrainian army has been underway since June to recapture Russian-occupied areas in the south and east of the country. Kiev had previously received new arms supplies from its Western allies and formed new battalions. The Ukrainian army remains “very powerful,” Milley said in the CNN interview.
Zelensky is scheduled to be received by US President Joe Biden at the White House on Thursday to discuss continued US support for Kiev against Russia’s war of aggression.
In addition, Zelenskyj is scheduled to hold talks with the leaders of the Democratic and Republican factions in the US Congress. A further military aid package for Ukraine worth $24 billion (around 21.5 billion euros) is currently being discussed in parliament in Washington.
