The University of Leipzig wants to prepare future teachers more for the use of modern media in teaching. As project coordinator Sarah Bischof explained, various seminars in the area of media education are offered at the Center for Teacher Training and School Research. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) also play a role.
A so-called digital classroom consisting of two physical rooms is intended to strengthen “the media literacy and digital skills of various target groups,” says Bischof. Available items include VR glasses, mobile devices, visualization and presentation hardware as well as AR and VR technology.
Students and lecturers deal with “media education, media education and media didactics,” according to the project description. According to Bischof, students can also use the classroom outside of the seminars to try things out. The central question is therefore how technology can be meaningfully incorporated into school lessons.
The digital classroom has been able to be used for teaching since April 2023. Last summer semester there were seminars on topics such as fake news and conspiracy theories, creating explanatory videos with learning groups and media education in primary school. In the future, school classes should also be able to take advantage of the offer.
