The option of renaming Avenue du Colisée to pay tribute to Guy Lafleur, who died on April 22, will have to be “considered” by the Toponymy Committee of the City of Quebec.

This is what we can read in a document from the executive committee made public late Monday morning. The notice of proposal originally submitted by Quebec 21 councilor Bianca Dussault was adopted with some modifications.

The final text provides “that the city council give the mandate to the Toponymy Committee of the City of Quebec to evaluate the proposals for a new toponymic name to honor Mr. Guy Lafleur once expired within one year after the death, considering the option of renaming the avenue du Colisée”. We add the need to “ensure the organization of a public consultation in the event of a name change for an existing road”.

As soon as the death of the “Blonde Demon” was announced, Bruno Marchand had promised that the memory of the legendary hockey player would be honored in Quebec. “Something has to be done. Will it be an avenue? Will it be a building? Will it be a space? No idea today,” the mayor said that day.
