Impossible to have an idea on the state of the deliberations of the jury at the trial of Carl Girouard. After starting their deliberations on Monday noon and coming forward a few hours later to have a summary of the judge’s instructions, they isolated themselves without making any new requests to the judge since.
They must agree unanimously on one of the four verdicts identified by the judge, namely a verdict of not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder or even manslaughter, murder in the 2nd degree or murder in the 1st degree.
The members of the jury deliberate together in a room dedicated to this purpose at the Quebec courthouse from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. after which they are taken to a hotel in Quebec to spend the night there, deprived of all communication.
Carl Girouard is accused of the murders of François Duchesne and Suzanne Clermont as well as five attempted murders that occurred on October 31, 2020 in the streets of Old Quebec. His lawyer, Me Pierre Gagnon, presented expert psychiatrist Gilles Chamberland to try to convince the jury that the 26-year-old accused was in the midst of psychotic delirium at the time of the crimes.
