There have been hundreds of construction sites on Germany’s highways this year. Until shortly before Christmas there were 690, a spokesman for the federal Autobahn GmbH told the German Press Agency. According to the information, these are construction sites with traffic restrictions for at least four days. At the turn of the year a year ago there were 552 construction sites.
According to the spokesman, it is not yet possible to say how many there will be next year. A total of 2,508 kilometers of road have been built or modernized in the past few months.
According to its own information, Autobahn GmbH invested around six billion euros in the maintenance and expansion of German federal highways. This is a record investment. The spokesman said it was carried out despite a shortage of skilled workers, high hurdles due to the war in Ukraine and the resulting supply chain problems. In 2022, 5.4 billion euros were invested.
Given the many construction sites, drivers had to be patient until the roadways were completely reopened to traffic. “The average duration is currently 448 days,” said the spokesman.
The motorway network in Germany extends to more than 13,000 kilometers. This year, according to Autobahn GmbH, a total of around 30 kilometers were added.
