They get up early every morning, seven days a week, brave the weather and also suffer from the increase in gas prices. To deliver your daily life, there are some 900 vendors across Quebec.

Significant revenue share

“We are going through the same thing as the others when it comes to the labor shortage. This year is extraordinary. Tipping is an important part of a vendor’s pay. Not all customers are aware of this, ”explains Dominic Payette, general manager at Messageries Dynamiques, responsible for the home distribution network for Le Journal de Québec and Le Journal de Montréal.

How much do readers give their vendor? According to Mr. Payette, some clients give nothing, while others can give $10 a week. Only about 20% of customers tip with electronic payment.

“The margin is very large. The vendor will often leave an envelope. The pizza delivery guy goes to your house once and people sometimes give $5. It’s the same principle, as in the restaurant. The street vendor delivers your newspaper every day, regardless of the weather,” he adds.

He points out that customers can also slip a $5, $10 or $20 at the camelot when they think about it.

However, human contact is more difficult since few people get up so early. In 2022, almost 90% of customers have abandoned the old weekly or fortnightly home collection as a means of payment.
