Admittedly, I feel too old for Tiktok. I only discover the hottest trends when they hit Instagram. And then I have to hear from my little sister that I’m totally “late to the party” – a hip expression for “being late for something”. Media reports have now drawn my attention to a strange Tiktok trend: young, cool people are publishing videos in which they drink from large, pastel-colored cups. “Stanley” is written on it in block letters. Why the hype, I wonder.
I quickly googled it and found the Tiktok videos in question under the hashtag “Stanley Quencher”. Owners pose proudly in front of the camera or film how they take the drinking vessel out of the box – unboxing. However, one thing actually blew my socks off during my research: the mug costs around 70 euros – a proud price for a thermal mug, in my opinion. I want to know what’s so great about it and have the Quencher H2.0 Flowstate cup sent to me. When I received and opened the package after about a week, I was surprised. The Stanley mug is bigger than expected. The drinking vessel has a capacity of 1183 milliliters and therefore looks more like a particularly cute, modern goblet than a casual thermo mug. However, there are also smaller cups with a capacity of 400, 567 or 850 milliliters.
The Quencher H2.0 Flowstate cup is made from 90 percent recycled stainless steel. By using recycled materials, the manufacturer wants to help reduce the ecological footprint. On the inside bottom of the cup I see a recycling symbol. Stanley is also committed to environmentally friendly packaging and the use of renewable energy in production. Maybe the reason for the hype?
I like the design – especially the color. Before ordering, I had a hard time deciding which one to choose. The selection is large: everything from light cream tones to colorful pastel tones to dark gray or black. I chose the popular classic “Rose Quartz”, a pale pink. The material feels comfortable. The appearance is matt.
The cup is slightly narrower at the bottom – so it can be placed in conventional cup holders. The cup is wider higher up. My Stanley mug also has a handle – they are also available without one. At the opening there is a screw cap with a sliding closure for the straw. This makes drinking from the giant vessel very pleasant.
The Stanley cup performed well in the practical test. The only drawback: It’s not completely tight. When I take out the straw, close the hole with the sliding flap and hold the cup upside down, it drips out. When it comes to cold storage, the manufacturer doesn’t promise too much: drinks stay hot for up to twelve hours or cold for up to 16 hours, making it ideal for on the go or for outdoor activities.
I will continue to use the Stanley mug in the future. It is particularly suitable for sports in the gym. However, for a whopping 70 euros, I expected that the cup would be securely closed and that I could put it in my bag without any worries – so unfortunately it is only suitable for transport when empty.
