The German handball champion THW Kiel celebrated their second victory in the second game of the group phase in the Champions League. Coach Filip Jicha’s team had a 35:32 (16:15) home win against the Hungarian representative Pick Szeged on Thursday. Niclas Ekberg was Kiel’s best thrower with seven hits. Mario Sostaric was successful eight times for the guests.

The THW was mostly in the lead in the first half, but was initially unable to distance the Hungarians decisively. The hosts’ biggest lead was two goals. That changed after the break. Patrick Wiencek made it 21:18 (38th minute), Harald Reinkind increased it to 29:25 (52nd). When the Swede Ekberg extended the “Zebras’ lead to six goals with his double strike to make it 32:26 (54th), a preliminary decision had been made.

For Kiel, pivot Hendrik Pekeler celebrated his comeback after his heel operation and right winger Sven Ehrig celebrated his comeback after his serious knee injury. In addition, the newly signed goalkeeper Samir Bellahcene made his first appearance for the North Germans. With his six saves, the Frenchman immediately demonstrated that he can be a real reinforcement for THW and a good replacement for his injured compatriot Vincent GĂ©rard.
