MADRID, 17 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Council of Ministers will foreseeably approve this Tuesday the draft Law on Sustainable Fishing and Fisheries Research, which will be sent, once approved, to the Cortes to submit it to the parliamentary processing process, according to what government sources have informed Europa Press.

Specifically, the head of the branch had already advanced its commitment to review the current fishing regulations, which date from 2001, so that it responds to the current situation and reality of the sector, updating the regulations and incorporating all legislative developments at the community level. and on ocean governance produced in the last 20 years.

The Government already approved in June 2019 the draft law on sustainable fishing and fishing research that allowed contributing to the conservation of fishing resources, valuing the socio-economic function of fishing in the territory and strengthening the link between science and fishing policy to streamline the regulatory framework.

In this way, the future law arbitrates measures for a more efficient use of the fishing quotas that correspond to Spain. Fishing opportunities may be transmitted between vessels and redistributed in the event that they are not used for a period of time.

In addition, the rule clarifies the requirements that give access to fishing resources and simplifies the bureaucracy on the general registry of the fishing fleet. In this way, to access fishing resources, a boat must be registered in this registry, have a license and be attached to one or more censuses and specific modalities.

Spain has a marine heritage with approximately 8,000 kilometers of coastline and an area of marine waters of more than one million square kilometers, so protecting fishing resources is key to maintaining marine biodiversity, but also to ensuring the future of the fishing, whose activity many Spanish coastal municipalities depend on.

In line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the 2030 agenda, the standard also seeks to strengthen the conservation and sustainable use of fishery resources, ensure that fishing activity contributes to the generation of wealth and employment, and social cohesion. of the coastal areas.

In addition, this new rule reinforces the link between fishing and research, the importance of which is reflected in the fact that it is incorporated into the very name of the law.
